A ministry of employment and the economy was established in the beginning of 2008. The ministry is formed of the former Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Labour and the units responsible for regional development in the Ministry of the Interior.

As a part of organisational changes Finnish Workplace Development Programme moved into the Tekes (the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation).
